Cathedral of Our Lady of Toledo – it’s worth seeing!
This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places to see in Toledo. This attraction is the Gothic cathedral – one of the most impressive in Spain. Its exterior is spectacular. The first element of the cathedral that attracts attention is the soaring tower with a square base and a characteristic pointed end. You also cannot pass by the portals of the main façade indifferently, from which the artistic beauty emanates. There are a total of 22 chapels inside the cathedral.
The interior of the Toledo temple is decorated with numerous Gothic stained glass windows. In the sacristy there is a pinacotheca of Spanish and Flemish paintings. We will see works of artists such as: Francisco Goya, El Greco, Diego Velázquez, Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Antoon van Dyck, Caravaggio. Alcazar – an attraction symbolizing Toledo The Alcázar is a stately building that is one of the symbols of Toledo. It is situated on a hill in the highest part of the city, so it can be seen from a distance. As a result, the majestic Alcázar dominates the skyline of Toledo, as well as its attractions. This important Toledan monument used to have a military function. Currently, it houses the Spanish Army Museum, which attracts thousands of tourists. It is worth taking the time to visit this rich and very interesting military exhibition, and learn a bit of history at the same time. The Castilla-La Mancha Public Library is also located here. On the highest floor of the Alcázar there is a cafe, as well as a vantage point from which you can admire the beautiful panorama of the city.
Toledo – what to visit? Alcantara Bridge
While on holiday in Spain and visiting Toledo, you cannot miss the historic Alcántara Bridge, which crosses the Tagus (Tajo) River. In the past, it was one of the main entrance gates to the city. Today, this Roman bridge is an important landmark of Toledo. The attraction originally had three arches, but after the bridge was destroyed and rebuilt in the 10th century, two remained. At the end of this beautiful bridge, there is a medieval tower on one side and a baroque triumphal arch on the other. Every tourist visiting Toledo should set foot in this noteworthy place.
Puerta de Bisagra in Toledo – a monument from before the 10th century
Puerta de Bisagra is the most famous monumental gate in Toledo. It was built during the reign of the Moors (before the 10th century). Then, in the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The gate consists of 2 different façades separated by a courtyard with a statue of Charles V. The outer façade of the gate is decorated with a large royal coat of arms with a characteristic double-headed eagle and a sculpture of the Guardian Angel. The façade facing the city is made up of two turrets crowned with roofs resembling pyramids.
Toledo – what is worth seeing? El Transito Synagogue
When visiting Toledo, you can’t forget about the old Jewish quarter, where there is, among others, the El Transito Synagogue. It depicts Mudéjar art and is the oldest surviving synagogue in the city. The interior design is delightful. The walls are decorated with a floral motif intertwined with inscriptions in Arabic and Hebrew. The Sephardi Museum is located here, where a collection of exhibits depicting the history and culture of Jews who were once residents of Toledo in Spain is exhibited.
The Santa María la Blanca Synagogue in Toledo – an attraction not to be missed
The Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca is another valuable monument of Toledo located in the famous Jewish Quarter. The interior, which is also made in the Mudéjar style, makes an incredible impression. At first glance, it does not look like a synagogue due to the clear Arabic influences in the decorations. The overlapping arches in white color, supported by decorated pillars, are especially delightful here. The whole creates a beautiful composition that is a real work of art.
Toledo – Cristo de la Luz mosque
The Cristo de la Luz Mosque is one of Toledo’s most important monuments related to the heritage of Arab culture. It dates back to 999 and since then, until today, it has kept its intact condition. In the 12th century it was dedicated to Christian worship. The mosque has a square plan, and the vaulting of its interior is very reminiscent of the famous mosque in Cordoba. Its walls are decorated with interesting wall paintings from the 12th century.
The del Greco Museum in Toledo – a must-see monument
The del Greco Museum is another interesting place in Toledo that is worth seeing. The museum is dedicated to the painter of Greek origin known as El Greco. This figure is one of the first associations associated with Toledo. Born in Crete, the artist spent a large part of his life in this city. In addition to the work of El Greco himself, the museum also has paintings by other Spanish painters from the 17th century. You will certainly feel the artistic spirit of this place here.
