Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the Spanish Canary Islands archipelago. The climate here is semi-arid or even desert. It is quite windy, and the air masses coming here from Africa bring large amounts of sand from the Sahara to the island. It is thanks to this that Fuerteventura boasts beautiful, long and sandy beaches, which are much more here than on other islands of the archipelago. There are e.g. The 5-kilometer Sotavento beach, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. In addition, Fuerteventura is a great island not only for sunbathing, but also for water sports.

In Fuerteventura, the climate is temperate – winters are more like European springs, while summers are warm and sunny.

The average annual temperature on the island is 21.25°C. The northeast trade winds arrive all year round, and the waves they create are especially appreciated by surfers. On colder winter days in Fuerteventura, temperatures can drop below 20°C during the day and as high as 10°C at night.

Due to the ongoing warming of the climate, hot, dry winds from Africa come to the island more and more often, bringing sandstorms and abnormally high temperatures.

It is much hotter inland than on the coast – the highest temperature was recorded in the municipality of La Oliva, 20 km northwest of Puerto del Rosario – it was 45.5 ° C. In the case of Fuerteventura, the weather is characterized by very little rain (only 85 mm per year) – unlike the other islands of the archipelago, there are no mountains that could increase precipitation on the north-eastern slopes. Even though the island lies almost on the Tropic of Cancer, Fuerteventura is not very warm in the sea. This is due to the cold sea current of the Canary Islands, which flows in this part of the Atlantic, from the coast of Portugal to Senegal. Not very high water temperature, however, does not prevent residents from swimming in the sea, even in winter.
